Random India fun facts!
Wednesday, December 7th, 2005-It’s illegal to advertise alcohol on television here. So all of the companies have their own lines of cassetes and cds, which conveniently have their logo as the cover art. So they’ll show a typical booze commercial, end with the full screen logo and say “Bacardi!” and then in the last few frames, it’ll zoom out to show the logo on a cd case, and in that really fast presciption drug warning voice, say “cassetes and cds”.
-There’s an article in the paper today about a member of the Assembly (which I believe is like Congress? Or parliament?) who walked into a meeting, doused himself, and the podium in kerosene, downed some poison and tried to light a match. He was trying to commit suicide in front of everyone to make a point about the high suicide rate of farmers in India. After they stopped him, he was quoted as saying “I’m not the type to commit suicide, normally I urge people to kill their opressors.” Right now they are arguing whether or not he should be suspended for the rest of the winter session.
-Good lourde they do make a lot of movies here. For example, the host of the Indian WWTBAMillionaire that I mentioned, Amitabh Bachchan, in addition to hosting a thrice weekly game show, has been in 10 movies so far this year, with two more coming out this weekend, at the same time. He’s been in like… 165 movies total, usually like 10 a year. Some of the movies that were in cinemas when I arrived in India are already off the new release shelves in dvd stores.
-It costs 2 bucks to rent a dvd here. Which seems normal, until you consider that seeing a movie in the theater is $2.50, and buying the dvd is like 6 bucks.
