Goa

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

So everybody’s been all up in my grill lately askin’ “Hey Ryan, how come you haven’t posted any stories lately?” “Where are the pictures?” “I want adventures!”

Well it isn’t that I’ve been lying around not doing anything. Far from it. It’s just that last time… I freakin’ played with wild monkeys in the ruins of an ancient fort. How do you top that?

But, since everyone has been asking, here is the lost update, my vacation to Goa from 2 weeks ago that I wasn’t going to post because as pleasant and relaxing as it was, it was surprisingly devoid of adventure.

I made the mistake of trying a package trip. I’m looking into doing some jungle trekking soon, and I’ve been debating whether I should go the “book a trip with a guide” route or the “wander into the jungle with a sleeping bag and try not to get eaten by a tiger” route. So I figured I’d acclimatize myself to the terrifying idea of a package tour.

(If I were on Fear Factor they’d force me to follow someone with an orange “guide” flag and a megaphone around a cultural landmark while everyone else laid in a coffin full of rats. There’d be a 5 minute shot of me standing on the edge of the bus doorway crying ‘No, don’t make me go… oh god, she’s passing out the bottled water…. Please, I wanna play with the rats….”)

The package was….. nice. A really nice hotel on a secluded, quiet beach… plenty of scenery….

I went parasailing (for about 45 seconds. Apparently I got ripped off.)

And they had a full schedule of day trips, including a trip to a much more popular (and crowded) beach, a boat cruise that turned out being devoted to seeing cheesy musical numbers rather than Goa, and the absolute worst thing you can say to Ryan Estrada on a trip…. “an afternoon of souvenir shopping”

What can I say? Nice hotel? Tourist hot-spots? Rest? Relaxation?
Boooooooooooooriiiiiiiiiiiiiiing.

Maybe I’ve just desensitized myself to international adventure. Maybe I’m spoiled. But if I have to choose between package tours and tiger attacks, I’ll probably take my chances with the tigers.

However, this aerial dogfight between an Eagle and a crow was pretty freaking awesome. It didn’t show up very well on film, but man. The were really going at it.
