The lighter side of Mumbai

Thursday, July 13th, 2006

With all the insanity going on, I haven’t posted my much happier Mumbai Adventure story from last Saturday. I figure this is the perfect time to show a more lighthearted side of the city.

On Saturday, I took a trip to Haji Ali. It’s a muslim mosque that is located in the sea. It can be reached only by a 500 yard narrow walkway that is only above sea level at certain times of the day. During high tide, no one can go in or out.

But even when the tide is low, huge wakes crash against the concrete walkway, soaking everyone on the path. It’s as though every time you went to church you had to get dressed up and then ride Splash Mountain to the front door.

I snapped pictures all the way up the path, but just before I made it inside, a HUGE wave came out of nowhere and not only soaked me from head to toe, but got my camera as well. I tried to take pictures of the inside, but while my camera could turn on and off, and zoom in and out, it would not take any photos. I assumed my camera had been destroyed. After about 20 minutes inside, I finally gave up on the camera and walked back to the walkway. On my way out, I saw a sign that read ‘no photography allowed inside the temple.’ As soon as I exited the gate, at the exact same spot my camera had stopped working, I tried the camera again. It was perfectly fine.

Apparently, the Muslim God is a stickler for the rules.

A few more photos from this weekend…..
